About

Completely self taught in Landscape and wildlife photography, I started out as a pure landscape photographer, rising at dawn to create compositions with that magical pre-sunrise color in the sky at my favorite photographic locations. Since then I’ve branched into portraiture, abstract, macro, wildlife, fashion, glamor, seascapes just to mention a few. Only to come back to my favorite; landscapes and nature. Along the way, I’ve won numerous awards for my photography, including gold medals at the "Oscars" of photography, the Super Circuit competition held in Europe.

Where It All Began:

One sultry morning in the deep south of Sri Lanka, I awoke early and looked out the window to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Unawatuna Bay while on holiday in that beautiful area. After trying to capture the sunrise unsuccessfully with my recently acquired point and shoot digital camera, I decided I wanted to learn how to capture those moments effectively and set out to teach myself everything that was required. Soon afterwards realised that landscape photography was my one true passion and dedicated all my spare time to pushing my own boundaries and learning everything required to capture those incredible moments.

Photographic Equipment:

I started out serious photography with analog (film) cameras, and switched to digital only about 3 years ago. I still use medium format film and love the look of Fuji velvia film stock.

Nowadays, for landscapes, I mainly use a 21 megapixel Canon 5d Mark II full frame camera, with Canon’s 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm "L" series prime lenses as well as the 17-40, 24-105 zoom lenses.

For Wildlife, I use the new Canon 1D Mark IV with the Canon 600mm, 500mm and 400mm prime lenses. They are all heavy and expensive, but unmatched in quality, in my experience.

For people photos, I use mainly nikon equipment; usually a (full frame) D700, my favorite ‘people’ lenses are the 85mm f1.4 and the Sigma 50mm f1.4, some of the landscape shots featured here are shot with a D700 with the new Nikon 16-35 f4 zoom, a very handy lens for my type of landscape photography.

Light and photography:

All photographs displayed in the online gallery have been photographed solely using natural light. The incredible light and colour that you see in photographs are a result of repeatedly revisiting locations during times of the day when most people are still asleep in bed or at home unwinding for the day. It is during these times when you are most likely to experience what I call ‘magic light’. Usually it only lasts for a matter of minutes or sometimes even seconds, but when it happens I am there, ready and waiting to capture it!
